The Black Box is a multicultural arts incubator expanding its outreach to several different locations around the Jersey Shore while seeking a permanent home... Featured performances are held in a variety of exciting venues...

Black Box Asbury Park presents Summer Shorts, excerpts from three new works-in-progress by their stable of playwrights, on Wednesday, July 20th, at 8:00pm, at the Middletown Arts Center, with whom they are teaming up to expand their following outside of Asbury Park. Evan Krachman’s “Android Loves Apple” is an impossible love story told by virtual emoticons trapped inside their respective smart phones. Alexis Kozak’s “The Life of Thursday” is a piece prompted by the birth of his second child. Mary Kelly’s “These Days” is about a couple unpacking and newspapers and praying and guns and trying to maneuver through life these days. Black Box, which is dedicated to the creation and presentation of new theatre pieces, is developing these plays for future full production. With the mission of helping local artists find greater exposure for their work, they are seeking to keep a solid presence in Asbury Park, while at the same time developing their presence throughout Monmouth County, especially into Middletown, Long Branch, and Red Bank. Summer Shorts will be presented on Wednesday, July 20th, at 8:00pm at the Middletown Arts Center, 36 Church Street, Middletown, NJ. Admission is $5, and tickets are available at the door.

The group meets on the first Monday of each month for creative writers to connect, commiserate and strengthen each other in a workshop environment. The door is open to all aspiring writers who want to develop new work, fine tune existing work, or cultivate the courage to share. Read a bit of your short story, play, screenplay, memoir, novel, essay, poem, blog post -- any constellation of words, really -- and let us know how we can support you. Indicate whether you want general feedback, specific notes or simple encouragement, and be willing to offer constructive comments to fellow writers as well. It's a friendly atmosphere and a great way to meet other aspiring wordsmiths.

Time & Place: First Monday of the month at 7 pm at the Stephen Crane House, 508 Fourth Ave., Asbury Park (no forum in December)

The Playwriting/Screenwriting group meets on the second Sunday of the month for playwrights and screenwriters to connect, read their work and get feedback in a positive, supportive and nurturing environment. Actors and directors are also welcome to attend the Group, connect with writers and either read or listen to new work. Writers bring in up to 20 pages of material to be read, hand out parts to readers and receive feedback on their work. The writers should indicate what kind of feedback they want to receive from the group. Feedback may include what works in the piece to more specific questions on content, structure, characters and dialogue or to no feedback at all. This is a great opportunity for playwrights and screenwriters to hear their work read out loud and see how to proceed with rewrites.

Date & Time: Second Sunday of the month, 1-3 pm (no meeting in December)
